Jean Rosengarten (Grala)

Jean R. Grala

( November 17, 1948 - February 10, 2019 )

Jean R. Grala, 70, of Malvern passed away February 10, 2019. Jean was born on November 17, 1948 in Bryn Mawr, PA to the late Richard and Helen Hall Rosengarten. Jean was the beloved wife of 44 years to Christopher W. Grala.

Jean grew up in Havertown, PA where she attended Haverford High School.  She received an A.A degree in secretarial science from Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ, and subsequently worked as a Medical Secretary in the Outpatient Surgery Department of Bryn Mawr Hospital for 12 years until the birth of her first child.  Jean did part-time, fee-for-service medical secretary work from home while raising her 2 children, Alyson and Andrew, and, as they were grown, became a part-time Teacher's Aide for the Good Samaritan Church pre-school program in Paoli, PA.  Jean was devoted to the many children she assisted in this role and regarded this phase of her vocational life as the most gratifying and personally fulfilling.

Jean's interests included sewing, baking and the performing arts, particularly ballet and musical theater.  She was an extraordinary seamstress, making many of her own dresses, her daughter's clothing, and all the curtains in her house, as well as crewel work which she often gifted to friends.  Many of her baked goods were legendary among family & friends, particularly her pumpkin/chocolate chip bread, pumpkin pie from scratch with home-made whipped cream, and her annual Christmas cookies.  Jean also enjoyed trips to the Jersey shore, particularly the family's annual vacations to Ocean City, NJ which she described as her "second home."

Jean is survived by her husband Chris, her two children, Andrew Grala (Brittany) and Alyson Grala, her grandson Chase Elijah Grala and her sister Nancy Alfonso. She was predeceased by her sister Alice Rosengarten Menzel.

Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jean’s memory to the  Huntington’s Disease Society of America, 505 Eighth Avenue, Suite 902, New York, NY 10018.
